Reloading cast bullets in .45-70
« on: November 17, 2016, 09:22:42 AM »
This isn't a how to or anything like that, more an observation for beginners:

Lee dies. We all know 'em & love 'em, but be aware...when you buy their .45-70 dies, the expander plug that comes in the sizing die WILL NOT WORK WITH CAST BULLETS.

The standard expander plug is .452" which allows you to seat the bullet, especially gas checks, but the brass then compresses the shank, preventing it from sealing in the bore correctly.
It took me a long time to figure out why my 1885 falling block didn't like cast & this never crossed my mind.
Track of the Wolf do sell replacement expander plugs for $4 though, in various sizes to match your bore. You'll need to slug your barrel to determine which size is most suitable.
RCBS also sell a .45-70 'Cowboy' sizing die, that mikes at .459, suitable for 90% of cast loads.
