Meaning of inlays?
« on: February 24, 2019, 04:21:38 PM »
Can anyone tell me the meaning of the 8 pointed star and 1/4 moon inlays you can add to a rifle? I can't seem to find anything. Thanks

I could really have this wrong but....

The sliver moon is known as a hunters moon.

The eight pointed star, I believe, represents the star of Bethlehem, I think.....

Dixon addresses some inlay meanings in his book on building the longrifle.  I think he mentioned that the eight pointed star was the "hunters star" or something like that.  Was maybe some kind of wish to find the way?

This is from The Art Of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle...

Hunterís Star - 4 major and 4 minor points of the compass for safely guiding a man home from a hunt or journey.

Moon - with or without a face (to show phases), it was the calander for planting, cultivating, harvesting, and building.
